Through the Winkelhiergemeente initiative, Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen highlights local governments excelling in strong, core-reinforcing local economy and retail policies. Deputy Joke Schauvliege, responsible for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, emphasizes the importance of collaboration: "With Winkelhiergemeente, the provincial government of East Flanders aims to inspire local authorities and entrepreneurs to continue investing together in attractive and vibrant commercial centers. Dendermonde, Herzele, and Lochristi each demonstrate in their own way how local purchasing can be stimulated. It is precisely this diversity that makes these three laureates particularly strong."
Dendermonde is praised for its broad end-of-year campaign Kras & Win (Scratch & Win), organized in close collaboration with four trade associations. Over 12,000 entries from more than 3,000 participants were registered. The campaign, which ran for a month and was widely rolled out across sub-municipalities, connected the city, trade associations, local retailers, and sub-municipalities.
Herzele distinguishes itself with two mutually reinforcing projects: Heuro, a digital local currency with a physical alternative, and Terras Kompas (Terrace Compass). Heuro, which had 71 local retailers affiliated by August, is used more broadly than a classic gift voucher and connects trade, hospitality, tourism, and municipal services. Terras Kompas brings together local catering offerings, terraces, walking routes, and accessibility information, and indicates where Heuro can be used for payment.
Lochristi offers a fresh take on the local shopping campaign with Lochristi Fietst! (Lochristi Cycles!). This initiative promotes shopping locally and nearby, encouraging travel by foot or bicycle. 61 local retailers participated, with customers collecting stickers for prizes. The involvement of EDUGO Lochristi added an extra dimension, with students assisting in logistics and the award ceremony.
The winner of Winkelhiergemeente 2026 will be announced on Friday morning, October 23rd, during the provincial Inspiration Day for local economy at the Provinciehuis in Ghent.
