The official groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of the development of the first phase of Nieuwe Bunders Business Park in Maasmechelen. This permitted phase covers 29 hectares and is expected to create 500 to 1,000 new jobs.

Deputy Tom Vandeput and mayor Raf Terwingen, together with project partners, gave the symbolic start signal. The partners include the municipality of Maasmechelen, POM Limburg, LRM, Landexplo, Aertssen Group, and Bouwbedrijf Keulen H. The new business park offers space for companies looking to grow, produce, and invest.
Nieuwe Bunders Business Park is strategically located in the south of Maasmechelen, between the E314, the N78, and Opgrimbie, opposite the existing business park Oude Bunders. Its proximity to the E314 junction and connections to the rest of Flanders, Liège, Dutch Limburg, and the German Ruhr area are significant advantages for companies with regional and cross-border operations.
The park aims to create additional space for companies with larger spatial needs, driving new investments, economic activity, and sustainable employment in Maasmechelen and the Maasland region. It targets larger enterprises requiring substantial space and having a (supra)regional reach, with a minimum plot size of 5,000 m².
The development prioritizes sustainable infrastructure alongside economic growth. Additional green spaces and water buffers are integrated into careful landscape design, with the livability of the surrounding area, particularly Opgrimbie, being a key focus. Plans include new access roads to keep heavy traffic away from residential areas and provide safe cycling infrastructure. A green buffer with native shrubs and tall trees will be established between the business park and adjacent buildings for visual screening and a green transition.
