Starting October 6, 2026, farmers and horticulturalists can once again register for a free collection of asbestos roofs, an initiative of the 'Asbestos-safe Agriculture Protocol'.

Farmers and horticulturalists with an asbestos roof can request a free collection again starting October 6, 2026. This initiative, part of the 'Asbestos-safe Agriculture Protocol' established in 2021, is carried out by a collector appointed by OVAM. OVAM covers all costs, making the collection free for farmers and horticulturalists.
To date, over 2.8 million m² of asbestos roofing has been collected from 4,263 locations. To participate, farmers must dismantle their asbestos roof themselves and carefully deposit the waste in the provided container. Only 'rigid' asbestos, such as corrugated sheets and roof slates, is permitted; facade elements and support beams are not allowed in the container.
Both active farmers, retired farmers, and part-time farmers are eligible to apply. Applications require personal details, exploitation number, agricultural number, VAT number, the address and plot number of the building with the asbestos roof, an estimate of the asbestos roof area in m², and a description of the building.
Applications can be made per exploitation number through a specific procedure. After assessment by OVAM, which takes up to 20 working days, approved applicants will receive contact details for the collector. The collector will deliver and pick up the containers once they are filled.
