Hazelnuts are not only tasty and healthy but also native and gaining popularity in Flanders. Farmer Jos Arits from Maaseik, in collaboration with ILVO, is implementing an agroforestry system. This system combines trees or shrubs with arable farming or livestock, which can provide farmers with extra income from wood, nuts, or fruit, while simultaneously benefiting biodiversity and the climate.
Within the PRO-NOOT project, ILVO contributes to the professional development of the hazelnut and walnut sector in Flanders. Farmers receive support and advice for both cultivation and the processing and marketing of their nuts. Entrepreneurs can also turn to ILVO's Food Pilot for product development and innovation.
