The Lokaal Dienstencentrum De Schijf in Mechelen-Noord hosted another successful job fair, organized by VDAB, the City of Mechelen, and Woonmaatschappij Rivierenland, where nearly 400 local residents met with employers.

The recent job fair in Mechelen-Noord, an initiative by VDAB in collaboration with the City of Mechelen and Woonmaatschappij Rivierenland, proved to be a significant success. Approximately 400 residents from the neighborhood participated, gaining the opportunity for direct interaction with potential employers from the region.
At the end of September, the city of Mechelen recorded 3,813 registered job seekers, marking a 2.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Within this group, 632 individuals are considered relatively close to the labor market. Nearly half (49.7%) are former inactive individuals, while 45% are receiving or have applied for unemployment benefits. According to RVA data, 497 of these job seekers face the risk of losing their benefits between July 2026 and July 2027.
Attendees at the fair not only engaged in direct conversations with present employers but also received guidance from VDAB mediators on career paths, training options, and CV preparation. This provided concrete support for those uncertain about their next career move.
“

"This fair is part of the collaboration with the city of Mechelen. We are focusing here on job opportunities in the vicinity of the social housing district. Especially for those receiving unemployment benefits, which are now time-limited, the fair offers additional chances to orient themselves and take steps towards employment or training."

"Individually you go faster, together you go further. The job fairs in collaboration with VDAB and Woonland are a prime example of this. Several times a year, we visit Mechelen's neighborhoods with a diverse offering, tailored to our job-seeking residents. This way, we create sustainable employment and jobs that offer people much more than just a salary. Furthermore, through numerous other job-focused initiatives, we work on activating job seekers in Mechelen, in partnership with organizations, companies, and facilitators. Because collaboration leads to work."

"As a government, we take our leading role to minimize the distance to the labor market. We want to give people the best opportunities for starting and restarting their careers: by bringing support and chances closer to them, collaborating with partners, and offering tailored guidance. Because a job remains the best lever for independence and emancipation. It provides people not only with an income but also with self-worth, perspective, and the chance to take control of their lives. Therefore, we want to leave no one behind, but help people on their way to work as quickly and sustainably as possible."

"Housing and work are two crucial building blocks for a strong future. As a housing association, we aim not only to provide our tenants with affordable housing but also to create opportunities for them to progress. By organizing this job fair together with the City and VDAB in the neighborhoods, we literally bring employment closer to the people."

Thijs Verbeurgt · Chair of Woonland
